A bouquet of ducks

A bouquet of ducks on ice to celebrate the New Year

How I count ducksThe winter food sources are slim so ducks are quick to gather for handouts at the north end of the millpond. I use this method of amassing them so I can count how many are there at night. I take the photo home to see it enlarged and paint a dot on each duck. Every tenth dot, I add a second color just so I don’t lose count along the way (right).

Just for fun, take a guess how many there are in this picture before clicking the headlline of this post to see the correct number in a comment.

There are 63 ducks in this photograph, I think. I might have missed one or two if they are buried in the frenzy of eating. About a dozen other ducks stood outside the frame of my camera so I’m guessing there are 75 at the north end this year. I’ll tell you about the south end ducks that roost at the south end soon.

    That is incredible.

No, Wanda. It’s entirely credible! You’ve seen it with your own eyes! :-)
Has Willaby come up on the boardwalk for you yet? Hope so.

  • wanda says:

Yes, he has. Twice. He flew up this morning before I even had the food out. He’s crafty.
