Since all of the Canada geese look alike, the nonconformists in the flock like to don distinctive attire but their wardrobe is rather limited. Feathers and leaves are their only options unless they discover a discarded hairpin or fishhook.
Down feathers shed during the daily preening sessions so geese sometimes stand around with some of them stuck to their bills. It doesn’t seem to bother them like a feather on a human nose would.
Just last night, a young drake woke up from his evening nap to say hello to me still wearing his feathered bedroom slippers (right) since we’re old friends. I recognize him as one of the 2012 ducklings due to the torn webbing between two of his toes.
