Abe is tenacious

Abe walks through the snow with his fused toe

Abe keeps other ducks away with nips when they are within reachIt’s always a kick to see Abe, but I don’t find him on each visit to the millpond. This week, he trudged through the snow to get his ration of duck chow (top). A few of the other Mallards jostled him a bit but he drives them away with nips (right).

Since his turtle bite in September, 2012, we’ve become fast friends. It took him a long time to relax around me — ducks become more skittish when they know they are vulnerable — but now he comes up to my feet without concern.
