Grungy compositions in black ice

December 12: Sometimes I just shoot interesting shapes when the pond freezes. The results are unpredictable because my flash illuminates cracks and bounces the light in various ways. Above, you can see the inch-wide fracture in the ice swoop across the image. I didn’t see that before the shot was taken. I play with how I can best bring out the textures and composition through creative cropping when I review these photographs on my large monitor.

I imagine these as textural “paintings” instead of photographs because they can become the basis of other art where I can tug at the colors and patterns. The colors are grungy when photographed, but they can be changed in Photoshop (left). Maybe I’ll toy with these images on cold winter nights to see how I can create art worth a second glance.

Nice – the natural breaks and uneven shapes are so pleasing to the eye. Recently I photographed some broken safety glass – it’s interesting, but not as cool as natural breaks. These breaks remind me of the chemistry associated with the water/ice transformation.

P.S. – thanks for the link to Ben Howard the other day. I’ve purchased his Old Pine CD and just love it. I’m a new fan.

Dawn, did you happen to run across my photograph of shattered auto glass posted on November 27, 2009? It’s this one: http://www.words4it.com/?p=180

Now you’ve got me interested in Ben Howard. The only song I’ve heard of his is the one in MacAskill’s video. I’ll listen to more of them now. Guess we should both thank Danny for introducing us to him.

I hadn’t seen your broken safety glass picture – gorgeous blue color. My image of broken safety glass was still intact and in the window frame.

Do you keep your images on Flickr? Let me know if you are there – I’ll friend you (whatever it’s called) to share my stuff.

Wow, Dawn. I love that image! It’s so cool that the glass is totally invisible while the cracks become so prominent. You have a great eye …

I think I have a Flickr account … somewhere. I don’t have my blog images there. I think I put up a couple of test images and that’s all. Sorry.
